During the 200.000 years of the existence of our species, homo sapiens, changes have occurred with an accelerating speed. This has led to necessary changes within the process of transferring knowledge, experiences and skills from one generation to the next. The objective of this article is to look into how the present schools can live up to the need of preparing the next generations for a life in a rapid changing society of which we only know that it will be different from society as it is of now. | ||||||

We live in a time where changes within the human societies and at our planet are happening with an increasing speed. Changes that earlier in our history happened over centuries do now happen within a single decade or even a single year. The conditions for life on Earth are changing, temperatures are raising, the ecologic cycles of life are being distorted, many species are getting extinct and we are facing the possibility of the extinction of our own species as well. The conditions for each of us in our personal life change as well. Our environments change. We are hit by one economic crisis after another where millions lose their livelihood. The gap between rich and poor is widening and lately the global community has been hit by a pandemic locking societies down, stopping production, causing unemployment, closing schools and forcing substantial parts of the global population to simply “stay at home”. Each of these situations are new. Therefore, we cannot just lean to previous experiences or consult the many books written - accumulating humanity’s gained knowledge - to get advice for what to do. We need to think anew, and act anew. Schooling is a powerful tool for creating the future – transferring knowledge, training useful skills, instilling attitudes and ethics. Schooling is not a neutral thing. Schools function and serve society within the existing societal contradictions. Contradictions between the ones who have, and the ones who have not. Contradictions between the ones who want to maintain society as it is, teaching the next generation to serve – and accept – status quo, and the ones who want to make changes. Contradictions about what kind of changes – and in favor of whom schooling and education tend to be about the past. We know the past. We can prepare for that. We do not know the future, but the children we teach in 2020 will live their adult life from 2030 to 2070 - under very different circumstances from the ones, we know about today. |
