Subject Horticulture, Good Cooking Section Natural preconditions for farming TASK Title The nitrogen cycle Nitrogen is very important because it is used by all living organisms for metabolism, reproduction and growth. No living organism can survive without nitrogen. The plants get nitrogen they need from the soil solution as inorganic nitrate or dead organic matter. The animals get their nitrogen by consuming living or dead organic matter that contains molecules composed partially of nitrogen. Farmers in my area can increase access to nitrogen for their crops by: • Adding organic manure to the soil. • Practising crop rotation because there leguminous plants and other kinds of plants that form an alliance with nitrogen fixing bacteria. One example is the bean family. They can maintain the required nitrogen in the soil which other crops can use during the rotation. • Applying nitrogen fertiliser • Avoiding tillage during the wet conditions to avoid loss of nitrogen to runoff water. |
